links: -That in
school and in wider society they can expect to be treated with respect by
others, and that in turn they should show due respect to others, including
those in positions of authority. -Alongside understanding the
importance of self-respect and self-worth, pupils should develop personal attributes
including honesty, integrity, courage, humility, kindness, generosity, trustworthiness and
a sense of justice

Starter: Show this picture and ask the following questions: What do you see? Who do you think they are? When do you think the photo was taken? |
Main: This
photo was taken in 1921. These are the Dick Kerr International Ladies AFC
(Association Football Club) and they were the first great female football
team in Britain.
During
World War 1 workers at an ammunitions factory in Preston would play football
during their breaks. The men formed a football team and so did the women. The
women challenged the men to a match and the women won. They became Dick
Kerr’s Ladies AFC and over time won more games and became famous. On Christmas day 1917 they beat Arundel Coulthard Factory 4-0 in front of a crowd of 10,000. They became famous by playing matches and raising money for charities across the UK. In 1920 they played in front of 53,000 spectators at Goodison Park Stadium in Liverpool. On
5th December 1921 the FA banned women’s football on Football
League grounds. Minutes of the meeting said, “Complaints have been made as to
football being played by women, the council feel impelled to express their
strong opinion that the game of football is quite unsuitable for females and
ought not to be encouraged.” Doctors gave evidence to prove that football posed a serious risk to women. The
team didn't want to give up so they went to play in Amercia. On this tour they played nine games, all against male teams;
wining three games, drawing three games and losing three games. Footballer
Pete Renzulli, who played for one of those teams in America, said at the time, “We were national champions and we had a hell
of a time beating them.” The team changed its name to Preston Ladies
FC and carried on playing till 1965. Women’s
Football was recognised by the FA in 1971. |
Role
play: Tell the children we are going to go back in time 100 years ago to 1921, to the court ruling where women are banned from playing on Football League
grounds. But this time the class will be giving evidence. Each
table needs to work together to put a case against the motion banning women. · explain
that we are from the future where the world is a different place; · explain
about equality in sport today and how it is different, tell the court about the England women's team in 2022 and the final game at Wembley. - challenge evidence from doctors that football is bad for female health · challenge
the view that football is unsuitable for females give
each table 5- 10 minutes to prepare their arguments and decide who will speak
up and then one by one ask them to present their case. Remember we need to be
respectful as we give our opinions. How do you win people to your point of view? Think about what we want to say, give evidence and speak
with conviction. (as teacher you should be the one to present the case that women should be banned. State your evidence and then encourage debate.) |
Activity: Use photos and questions below as follow up work. |
Plenary: what
do we know about women’s football today? Show a picture of the current England
team and successes (in FIFA World cup we came 3rd in 2015 and 4th
in 2019, we won in 2022) Why
do you think the FA changed their mind about women playing football in 1971?
What does this show about attitudes and ideas changing over time? Why did it take so long? How do ideas change? What can we learn from history? Who
is football for today? How do we know there are ‘no outsiders’ in football
today? Are there still outsiders? If so, how do we make sure no one feels like an outsider in sport? What would be your message to the Dick Kerr International ladies team? |
Why do you think women’s football became popular during
World War 1?
What is a stereotype, how is it formed?
How do we challenge stereotypes?
What would the Dick Kerr Team in 2021 think of this photo of the 2022 England Team?
If you could go back in time and meet the Dick Kerr team in
1921, what would you say to them?
What do we say about sport and equality at our school? Is
this just about gender? Why is this about No Outsiders?
