Enquiry question: How do I pass hope on?

RSE links: how important friendships are in making us feel happy and secure, and how people choose and make friends

Starter: In this story a child finds a pebble and it makes her feel calm. How do you think a pebble can possibly make a child feel calm and safe?

Main: Read “Lubna and pebble” and discuss:

-          What is the situation Lubna finds herself in? what is a refugee?

-          Why was Lubna on a beach, why were dad’s arms salty?

-          “they landed in a land of tents” where is Lubna?

-          “Pebble always listened to her stories, pebble always smiled back” what is Pebble providing for Lubna?

-          Even when Amir arrives, why do you think pebble still means so much to Lubna?

-          Why does Lubna give the pebble to Amir?

-          “What do I do if I miss you?” what does Lubna tell Amir to do? What is she encouraging Amir to do?

-          Where do you think the pebble is today?

Activity: I’m tempted to take the children outside to find their own pebbles and then draw a smile on them..

Or,

In the story Lubna passes Pebble on to Amir, but do you think Amir still has it? Who might Amir pass Pebble on to and what will he say when he does? Draw a chain showing Pebble being passed down to different children and include speech bubbles showing what words are spoken as Pebble is passed on. Perhaps the final person is the you.. who will you give Pebble to?

Plenary: Look at the enquiry question; how is this story about passing on hope? What can we learn from Lubna and this story?
