Text: The neighbourhood surprise by Sarah Van Dongen

 Lesson plan by Andrew Moffat

Enquiry question: what is a community?

RSE links: the importance of respecting others, even when they are very different from them (for example, physically, in character, personality or backgrounds), or make different choices or have different preferences or beliefs.

Starter: What is a community? Do you live in a community? How do people in a community help each other?

Main: Read The neighbourhood surprise by Sarah Van Dongen and discuss:

-          Look at the food inside the front cover – which do you recognise?

-          How are the people who live on Redbird Rd different to each other?

-          When Koya and her Dad bake a cake, what do they think about? Why don’t they just bake a cake with eggs and butter in?

-          Who likes the curries by Hassan’s Mum? Who likes spicy food in our class?

-          When Alex makes a pie, what does he think about, why doesn’t he just use chicken?

-          What does vegetarian mean? What does vegan mean?

-          Look at the page where everyone cooks – how are the people different? Do you think the food will be different too? How exciting!

-          Look at who comes to the party – how are they different? Is everyone invited? Why? What does this show about the community?

Activity:

If we had a party in our class, could we bring different foods? What different foods do we know about? Children research and plan a party menu with foods from different cultures.

(great opportunity to do some food tasting from different cultures)

Plenary: How would the party be different if everyone was the same? What would the food be like?

What does diverse mean? Why is this story about No Outsiders?
