Text: Rapunzel – Bethan Woolvin

lesson plan by Andrew Moffat www.no-outsiders.com

Enquiry question: Do all princesses need to be saved by a prince?

RSE links: Respectful relationships - the importance of self-respect and how this links to their own happiness

Success Criteria: I know what gender means / I know what gender equality means

Starter: Recall the fairy story Rapunzel; what is the story? In the story why do you think the princess is saved by the prince? Are all princesses saved by princes in fairy stories? Why do you think that is?

Main: Read Rapunzel and discuss what is different about this version of the fairy tale and the original

-          What is the first time in the story that we see a different Rapunzel to the original?

-          How does Rapunzel find out how to defeat witches? (she read a book)

-          When the finds a leaf in Rapunzel’s hair, how would the original Rapunzel have reacted? How does this Rapunzel react?

-          How does Rapunzel defat the witch? Why do you think the original Rapunzel didn’t think of that?

-          What could the original Rapunzel learn from this new Rapunzel?

Activity: Write a letter to the original Rapunzel in her tower telling her about this new version of her story and giving her advice. Think about the advice you could give the original Rapunzel; how could she be more assertive, and how would this impact on her life? Do you think she is waiting to be rescued?

Plenary:  Why do you think Bethan Woolvin wrote this book? What is the message she wants to give to children? Read the note from the author at the end of the book; what does “a braver, more resourceful Rapunzel” mean?

Why is this story about no outsiders?
