Packs – Hanna Salyer
Text: Packs – Hanna Salyer lesson plan by Andrew Moffat www.no-outsiders.com |
Enquiry question: Are we stronger together? |
RSE links:
Families and people who care for me- that families are important for children growing up
because they can give love, security and stability |
Success Criteria: I know why we are stronger together / I
can give examples |
Starter: what
are the names given to different groups of animals? For example, birds group
in a flock; does anyone know different names for animal groups? List the ones
we know and then add more to the list as you read the book. |
Main: Read
“Packs” (but not the authors note at the back) and the discuss -
How
many different animal group names did you know/ have you learned? -
What
are the different reasons animals group together? -
Look
at these video clips of bats in Austin, Texas. Over 1 million bats live under
the bridge and every night at sunset they come out. This video explains https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LBoZIO3Seo And this one shows what it looks like when you are on the bridge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6GlUhK9hSs This video shows a huge herd of wilderbeast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxWWXX6dxzk What do all these videos have in common? Which do
think is most impressive- why? What do these videos tell us
about animals? After this discussion
read the author’s note at the back of the book and discuss: “The diversity on our
planet helps us all thrive” – what does this mean? |
Activity: the
pages of the book describe many different animals, but there is no page to
describe humans. What do humans do in groups, how do we work together?
Children create a page and an image to go in the book about humans. Study the
language used by the author to describe the animal groups and encourage
children to think of interesting adjectives and expanded phrases to make
their human groups sound interesting. |
Plenary:
return to the enquiry question; how are we better together? Is this lesson
linked to No Outsiders? How? |
