Text: Grumpy frog by Ed Vere lesson plan by Andrew Moffat www.no-outsiders.com |
LI: To explore the meaning of compromise Success criteria: I know what compromise means / I know how to reach a compromise/ I
can accept things I may not like |
RSE: -the importance of respecting others, even when they are very different from them (for example, physically, in character, personality or backgrounds), or make different choices or have different preferences or beliefs - the conventions of courtesy and manners |
Starter: ask if children know what compromise means. Give the children an example of a compromise: say today you really wanted tuna wrap for lunch. You had been looking forward to it all morning and when lunch time came you were so excited. But when you got to the hall, there were no tuna wraps left! Oh No! Ask the children how do you think I felt? I was so mad! I wanted to shout and stamp my feet and demand someone made me a tune wrap. What do you think I did? What do you think happened? I had to compromise – what does that mean? |
Main : Read “Grumpy Frog” and talk about the story- how is it
about compromise? -why do
you think Frog wants everything to be green? - what
happens if Frog doesn’t get what he wants? How does this affect the other
frogs and how do they respond? - why do
you think no one will hop with him? - “You
are pink! I want my friends to be green! How is Frog behaving? - why
does Frog say sorry and what is the response from the other frogs? - who
makes a compromise at the end of the story? What has Frog learned? How do you
think this will affect his life in future? |
Role play/activity: ask children to role play and answer these
questions to help frog stop feeling sorry for himself, before recording their
answers: Why isn’t
everything green? Why do I
eat flies? Why isn’t
it my birthday today? Why won’t
anyone hop with me? Or children watch this clip of author Ed Vere drawing Frog and follow the
directions to create their own version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6R9gWhn8Wc |
Plenary: Ed Vere is the author, he says this book is
about, “compromise, friendship and saying sorry.” What else do you think
this book is about? What can we learn from frog? why is this about no outsiders? |
