Bloom – Anne Booth
| Text: Bloom – Anne Booth lesson plan by Andrew Moffat www.no-outsiders.com |
| Enquiry question: How do choices I make affect others? |
| RSE links: RSE links: respectful
relationships pupils should know practical steps they can take in a range of
different contexts to improve or support respectful relationships |
| Success Criteria: I can choose how I behave, I can choose the words
that I say, I know my choices have consequences |
| Starter: what is a consequence? Give an
example of behaviour having a consequence. Show this image of a security
guard holding an umbrella over the dog https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/supermarket-security-guard-holdsumbrella-over-dog/  and discuss the consequences of that choices
(what does one kind action lead to) |
| Main: Read “Bloom” discuss:  - Why do you think speaking to the flower
every morning made the girl feel happy?  - What was the first consequence of the man
shouting, what was the next?  - How does the man react to all the
suggestions from the gardener, how else could he have reacted? - Why do you think the man feels
nobody likes him?  - Look at the page where the man tells the
flower his problems, what is the contrast with the little girl?  - What is the contrast on the next page? How
are their lives different? - “What did she do that I don’t
do?” what is the answer?  - Were there magic words? |
| Activity 1: Show the children this clip of two boys making
cushions for carers and shop workers during the lock down period. Reggie has
Cerebral Palsey. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-derbyshire-52895044/derbyshire-brothersmake-cushions-for-tired-key-workers  ask children to focus on the way Ronnie
speaks to Reggie; what does he say and how does he say it? What is the impact
on Reggie? Near the end how does Reggie describe his brother? Why does he use
those words? How would you describe their relationship? Would you like a big
brother like Ronnie? Why? Activity 2: Look at the words the man uses
to help the flower bloom at the end of the story. Draw a range of colourful
flowers and around each plant write positive words and sentences to keep them
  blooming. |
| Plenary:  what impact do you have on
people if you choose to say positive words. There is a saying “Is the glass
half full or half empty?” what does that saying mean? How is this lesson
relevant to us today? When times are challenging, how do our actions affect a
situation? What can we learn from this story? Why is this story about community cohesion? |
