Avocado asks – Momoko Abe

Text: Avocado asks – Momoko Abe

lesson plan by Andrew Moffat  www.no-outsiders.com

LO: To know who I am

RSE: the importance of self-respect and how this links to their own happiness

Starter: what does the word identity mean? How do we know who we are? How are our identities formed?

Main : Read “Avocado asks” and discuss:

-          Why is the avocado unsure where it belongs?

-          In what way is an avocado a fruit and in what way is it a vegetable?

-          “Suddenly avocado's world turned upside down” why?

-          When avocado asks the vegetables and fruits if he is one of them, they all give reasons why he isn’t like them. What else could they have done to make avocado feel better?

-           Avocados insides “felt like they were turning into guacamole” - why?

-          Look at the language tomato uses; how does it contrast with the language the other food use?

-          What does avocado learn at the end of the story?

Activity: Show the children an avocado and a tomato; find definitions for each and arguments for or against them belonging to the fruit or vegetable family- why is there a disagreement here?

Now look at the language used by the foods in the story to turn away avocado. Rather than focusing on ways avocado is different to them, if they had focused on ways he is similar, what would have been the impact?

A great activity would be to make guacamole: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/best-ever-chunky-guacamole no cooking or blending involved!

An alternative activity is to record ways the avocado is a fruit and ways the avocado is a vegetable and come up with a solution for its identity.

Plenary: “Who cares what we are when we are simply amazing! What can we learn from the avocado and tomato? Why is this story about No Outsiders?
